These small glands naturally secrete a scented fluid that dogs use for territorial marking and identification. In some dogs, these glands empty naturally during defecation, but other dogs will struggle to empty the anal sacs which can cause irritation or a smell.

However, some dogs may experience difficulty in clearing these glands, leading to discomfort, swelling, or infection. Regular expression of these glands, whether done at home or by a veterinary professional, can help prevent such complications and ensure your pet's comfort and well-being. This process, when done correctly, can alleviate discomfort and maintain the health of the anal glands.

Dogs need their anal glands expressed to prevent discomfort, inflammation, or infection that can occur when these glands do not empty properly. Normally, a dog's anal glands are naturally expressed when they defecate. However, some dogs may have difficulty with natural expression due to various factors like obesity, soft stools, or anatomical peculiarities.

Regular manual expression ensures that these glands do not become overly full or impacted, which can lead to serious health issues such as abscesses or, in extreme cases, surgery. Expressing your dog's anal glands involves a careful and gentle process that can be performed at home or by a professional. It is essential to use the correct technique to avoid causing discomfort or injury. Generally, there are two methods: external and internal expression. External expression can be done by applying gentle pressure to the glands located just beneath the skin at the four o'clock and eight o'clock positions relative to the anus.

For internal expression, a more invasive technique, gloves and lubrication are necessary, as the glands are accessed from inside the rectum. Whichever method you choose, it’s important to stay calm and use a gentle touch, as this can be an uncomfortable process for your dog. For first-timers, a demonstration by a veterinarian is highly recommended to ensure safety and efficacy.

Position your dog in a comfortable standing or squatting posture.

Wearing gloves, locate the anal glands at the four o'clock and eight o'clock positions relative to the anus.

Using a piece of tissue or a cloth, gently apply pressure upward and inward towards the anus.

Release pressure once you see a small amount of fluid on the tissue, and wipe clean.

Prepare by wearing gloves and applying lubricant to your gloved finger.

Lift your dog’s tail and gently insert the lubricated finger into the rectum.

Feel for the small, pea-sized glands just inside the rim.

Apply gentle pressure toward the anus until you feel the gland empty.

Remove your finger and cleanse the area.
