Glandex® Glossary - Anal Glands (Sacs)

Anal Glands (Anal Sacs)

Anal glands, also known as Anal Sacs, are two small sebaceous glands located near the anal opening of all dogs and cats. They normally secrete a foul (fishy) oily substance during normal defecation for scent marking purposes. The term anal sac is considered the more appropriate medical anatomical description as they are two small empty sac like structures that are lined with glandular cells.
